While Chattanooga is the 4th largest city in the state, it covers roughly 150 square miles and since receiving national recognition for the renaissance of its beautiful downtown and redevelopment of its riverfront, it has been constantly expanding. Like our City, the challenges of law enforcement are always changing and growing and for the Chattanooga Police Department this is no exception. The local economy includes a diversified mix of manufacturing and service industries, four colleges, and several preparatory schools known throughout the South. Attractions such as the Tennessee Aquarium, Lookout Mountain and several Civil War battlefield sites, the African American Museum, the Creative Discovery Museum for children, and the Appalachian Trail bring thousands of people to the area. Besides these day-to-day staples, Chattanooga Police also contend with annual events like the Riverbend Festival which attracts crowds 100,000 strong, the Bessie Smith Strut, the Fall Color Cruise, and Chattanooga is also the home of NCAA Division I-AA national football championships and hosts the national softball championships every year. These are just a few of the challenges that separate us from our humble beginnings in 1852, and now our ranks are approaching 500 sworn professionals who are committed to serving our citizens and guests and making Chattanooga a safe place to work, live and play. The Chattanooga Police Department is committed to excellence through strong communication with its local elected leaders and citizens, and has voluntarily demonstrated its dedication on a national level as a CALEA Accredited Police Department by adhering to over 460 standards set not by ourselves, but by Law Enforcement professionals across the country.
