Chattanooga Receives Draft State Storm Water Permit

The City of Chattanooga has received a draft copy of its National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit from Tennessee s Division of Water Pollution Control. The permit requires the City to comply with its conditions relating to storm water discharges. The permit also requires the City implement a storm water management program to reduce the amount of pollutant discharged into Chattanooga s many streams and the Tennessee

Storm Water Division Offers Erosion Control School

The Storm Water Management Division, in cooperation with the Chattanooga Home Builder s Association, has established a certification class to further promote the use of best management practices in erosion control. The class is designed to make participants aware of how to properly and economically use erosion controls. Participants who successfully complete the 4-hour class will be awarded a Green Card which certifies that they have passed the class s written test on erosion controls.

Certified individuals will still be required to submit an erosion control plan and obtain a Land Disturbance Permit from the City to perform any land disturbance projects. However, storm water inspectors will only inspect storm water discharge points for erosion control deficiencies from these projects. As before, the inspectors will gladly meet anyone on-site to assist them with addressing erosion controls. In addition, storm water inspectors will still inspect detention/retention ponds for proper size and construction.

The first class will be held in early February, 1996 at the Chattanooga Home Builder s Association Office located off South Terrace Drive. Class enrollment is limited to 15 individuals per class. Dates and times will be announced at a later date. For more information, please fill out and submit the application form on back or call Doug Fritz at (423)757-5120.

Did you know that . . . leaving a buffer of thick vegetation along waterways will slow storm water runoff, soak up pollutants, and keep the banks stable.

Did you know that . . . trees and shrubs will absorb up to fourteen times more rainwater than a grass lawn and they do not require fertilizer. *
