City Installs Cameras to Combat Illegal Dumping

4/2/2008

Digital photographs will be used to help prosecute

Chattanooga, Tennessee – City of Chattanooga officials will begin installing and monitoring digital cameras throughout the city to capture photographs and prosecute individuals who are illegally dumping.  “This irresponsible and criminal behavior affects everyone in our city and leaves a negative impression on those who visit,” said Mayor Ron Littlefield.  “These cameras will be a 24 hour-per-day set of eyes and will ultimately help us identify and prosecute those individuals responsible for this activity.”

The first camera was installed in the 2400 block of 13th Avenue where chronic illegal dumping has caused the area to become blighted with litter, trash, waste tires, and household garbage.  The cameras are a unique digital deterrent system designed to stop illegal trash dumping, graffiti, vandalism, and other illegal behavior.

The FlashCam camera is motion activated, solar-powered, and operable day and night.  When motion is detected, a bright light flashes, and a loud recorded message informs the intruder to, “Stop!  This is a restricted area.  Your photograph has just been taken and we will use it to prosecute you.  Leave the area now.”

Illegal dump sites are a burden on the resources of the city and affect the quality of life of citizens.  To report illegal dumping, please call 311 or visit www.chattanooga.gov and click on the 311 logo.
