Councilman to Lead Elementary School Cross Country Races

9/10/2009

Chattanooga, Tennessee – District 9 Chattanooga City Councilman Peter Murphy will lead out and “rabbit” elementary school cross country races today beginning at 4:15 p.m. at the Tennessee Riverpark.  “This is excellent for fitness for children and an opportunity for many of them to learn self improvement skills by application of hard work, effort and thoughtfulness about strategy,” said Councilman Murphy.

The elementary schools cross country race program is sponsored by the Chattanooga Track Club and held in cooperation with the Chattanooga and Hamilton County Parks Departments, and The Baylor School.  Hundreds of public and private elementary school students participate in the annual one-mile race.  Councilman Murphy stated, “The Chattanooga Track Club has been performing this wonderful service for years and they are to be commended for this selfless volunteer effort they are putting forth to help our youth.  I have been pleased to help volunteer as the course guide or “rabbit” for a few years now.  It is wonderful to see the excitement of all the kids for a sport that I love.”
