Mayor Littlefield Proclaims June 23rd “Olympic Day” and Joins the City Council in Recognizing Local Youth Athletes

6/19/2009

Chattanooga, TN:  Mayor Ron Littlefield will proclaim June 23 as Olympic Day in a special address to the City Council on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:00 p.m.  Mayor Littlefield will give the Proclamation and there will be a special presentation by local youth who have won nationally sponsored athletic skills competitions locally and gone on to compete in state and national sports events.

The Mayor’s proclamation and recognition of children throughout the city, “our future Olympians” will be made to the City Council on Tuesday, June 23rd at 6:00 p.m. at the City Council Assembly Room located at 100 Lindsay Street.

Mayor Ron Littlefield values and supports the City’s Parks and Recreation Department’s Sports Programs and explains, “Everyday, we see the positive effect of sports play on the youth at our inner city recreation centers, the excitement of the many nationally sponsored skills events that draw children and families from all over our area, and the way these healthy, active, character building programs impact citizens of all ages and abilities year round”.  “The young athletes that are participating in our programs  today will be of competing age in the year 2016 and the next great Olympic champions!”

At the urging of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley during the U.S. Conference of Mayors in January in Washington, D.C., Mayor Ron Littlefield joined with fellow mayors across the country in a collective pledge of support for hosting the Olympic Games in Chicago in 2016.

Tuesday’s mayoral proclamation and the community’s cooperative celebration with other cities will send a clear message to the International Olympic Committee that our city and the United States of America support the Chicago 2016 bid for the Olympic Games. An announcement of the site for the 2016 Olympic Games is forthcoming in October 2009.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department’s Sports Program hosts and facilitates the Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit, and Run Skills Competition and the Junior Olympic Skills Basketball Competitions each May, the Hershey’s Track and Field Games each June and the NFL Punt, Pass, and Kick Skills Competition each October.  These events are free to children from ages 8 – 14 city-wide and national sponsors provide the means for talented athletes to advance to state, regional, and national events. Recent winners in these events will be introduced to local officials and participate in a fun Chattanooga themed ‘show of support’ for Chicago’s bid.

Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of Baron Pierre de Coubertin’s June 23, 1894, convening of the first International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris, and the founding of the Modern Olympic Games. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration, with each Olympic Committee sending Olympic Day greetings to participating nations.
