Street Smarts Moves to New Outdoor Chattanooga Center

4/3/2009

Chattanooga, Tennessee – Outdoor Chattanooga and Bike Chattanooga, the bicycle advocacy umbrella organization for Chattanooga and Hamilton County, will move their monthly Street Smarts vehicular cycling class to the new Outdoor Chattanooga building, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park, beginning Sat., April 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Street Smarts offers cyclists the skills they need to ride their bicycles on the road with more safety and predictability. League of American Bicyclists-certified instructors teach the rules of the road, basic bicycle maintenance, emergency maneuvers, and other techniques of vehicular-style cycling.

“We teach cyclists how to drive their bicycles on the road like a vehicle,” says Chattanooga bicycle coordinator Philip Pugliese. “Hand signals, traffic laws, how to position a bicycle safely in a travel lane, what to wear: all of these are important to riding on the road.”

During Street Smarts, students receive classroom instruction and then practice emergency maneuvers and riding on the street with instructor guidance.

“Bicycles and safe cycling are an integral part of the City’s vision for a healthier and more sustainable community,” says Mayor Ron Littlefield. “Street Smarts can help people take an important step toward using their bicycles as an alternative way to get around town.”

Street Smarts is offered the second Saturday of each month. Cost is $25 and the class is geared for adults and kids ages 14 and older when accompanied by an adult. Students provide their own bicycles and helmets. Pre-registration is required by contacting Philip Pugliese at (423) 643-6887 or via email at ppugliese@outdoorchattanooga.com

Additional 2009 classes are scheduled for May 9, June 13, July 11, August 8, October 10, November 14, and December12.
