Tennessee Venture Forum in Chattanooga today
![]() 11/17/2003Chattanooga, TN—Beginning today, Mayor Bob Corker will host the Tennessee Venture Forum, a state-wide event that connect investors with entrepreneurs and small businesses owners seeking capital. Over its seven year history, the Venture Forum has been conducted in Nashville and Knoxville, but today is the first time the event has ever been held in Chattanooga. Over the next 2 days, 15 companies who were selected by a panel earlier in the year will have the opportunity to present their ideas and business plans to the 300 institutional and individual investors who will be attending the event from throughout the United States. Four of the presenters are Chattanooga companies. The event underscores the efforts of Mayor Corker to bring venture capital to the city. In the past two years, through the Mayor’s administration, the city has recruited Southeast Community Capital to Chattanooga which is actively capitalizing local businesses. Local companies are able to benefit from a loan portfolio of more than $50 million offered through the venture capital company. In addition, the City of Chattanooga created the Chattanooga Opportunity Fund, a loan fund, initially capitalized by the City with $1.5 million that has grown to $2.5 million. The Chattanooga Opportunity Fund makes capital available specifically for locally owned start up companies, minority owned companies and existing small businesses. These efforts are changing the way in which business works in Chattanooga. Entrepreneurs now have access to the funds they need to grow their businesses. Small business owners attracted to Chattanooga for its outstanding quality of life have the tools they need to live in our community and be successful. Already more than 18 small local businesses have received the capital they need to grow their businesses. All media are encouraged to cover the event’s opening at 1 p.m. this afternoon which will be held at the Chattanooga Convention and Visitor’s Center in Banquet Rooms H, I and J.
