Community Groups and Programs

Citizens Police Academy (CPA), started in 1999 as an outreach effort to create positive interaction and communication between the department and the citizens it serves. Since its inception, it has had approximately 10 academy classes with over 180 citizens participating.

Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA), is comprised of graduates from the Citizens Academy. These graduates serve as ambassadors for the Department within their perspective communities, as well as volunteers for the Department.

Citizens Police Alumni Translating Team (CPATT), was developed in 2001 as a means of using Hispanic CPAAA to assist CPD officers and precinct counter employees with translations. Cricket provided cell phones specifically for use of the CPATT members in translating to employees.

Chattanooga Police Department Spanish Program, started in 1999, as an effort to get CPD personnel familiar with basic Spanish and cultural norms for better interaction with the Hispanic community. More than 100 police personnel participated in this program.

Community Forums, started in 1999, as an effort to provide a format for citizens to express their concerns to the Administration and Supervisors of the Department.

Annual Grandparents Workshop & Luncheon, is an event of education and celebration extended to Senior Citizens, who are grandparents raising children. It is an event held before Grandparents Day, which continues to draw crowds of appreciative, senior citizen grandparents.

Annual Shop with a Cop, is an event of fun and excitement extended to underprivileged children, who have been brought to the attention of the police department by local school systems and the Department of Human Services. It is an event held before Christmas, where Police Officers go shopping with these children at a local department store, prior to its opening to the general public. The funding for this event comes from private donations.

The Hispanic Coalition was formed in an effort to build better working relationships within the Hispanic community. Informational forums and community fairs, which have attracted over 500 Hispanics, have been held.

Hispanic Newspaper, MUNDO HISPANO, is another venue for our outreach efforts into the Hispanic community to answer questions of concerns and to recruit Hispanic officers.
