Household Hazardous Waste:
The Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located at 3925 North Hawthorne Street. It is open on the second Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00p.m.
Acceptable Materials
Fuels/Lubricants-Contaminated motor oil, contaminated gasoline, old kerosene, brake fluid, transmission fluid, antifreeze, grease, solvents.
Garden Products-Fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides
Home Improvements-Paints (oil and latex), roofing cement, household cleaners, bleach, paint thinner, fungicides, wood preservatives, wood and metal, polishes
Other-Oven cleaners, drain openers, adhesives
Non-acceptable Materials
Unidentified Materials
Radioactive Waste (including smoke detectors)-Contact TDEC at 1-888-891-8332
Pressurized fire extinguishers-Contact your local Fire Marshall
Explosives and ammunition-Contact your local law enforcement agency
Medical Waste-There are private companies that can provide this service for you
Commercial Hazardous Waste-There are commercial haulers available for this purpose
Wet cell batteries-these may be taken to the recycling center.
Guidelines:
Store materials in a dry, well ventilated area away from children, pets, food and heat sources. Keep products sealed in their original containers. Always store your materials in an upright fashion to avoid spills. Be sure to clean up spills immediately.
When you get ready to bring in you materials, place any leaking container in a sturdy, sealable container packed with an absorbent material like cat litter or crumpled newspaper. A clear plastic bag can also be used.
Materials should be transported in the trunk of your vehicle to prevent spills, make sure containers are upright and immobile.
