Forestry Highlights-Program Branches

Streetscapes:
This effort involves the renovation and standardization of sidewalks and street intersections, and installation of trees in the downtown area.




Service Requests:
The Office of Urban Forestry receives 600-800 requests annually for pruning, deadwooding, removal, or emergency work.These requests originate from citizens, the Police Department, and the Chattanooga Area Rapid Transit Authority.




Permits and Inspections:
By ordinance, anyone who works around a city tree must first obtain a permit from the City Forester who specifies the appropriate tree protection measures.


Routine Maintenance:
This is non-emergency work performed on trees at regular intervals to keep them healthy and safe.




Tree City USA:
This honorary designation is given to communities that have established urban forestry programs and provide a basic level of service. To qualify, a community must meet the following standards:

     - Have a community tree ordinance.
     - Have a tree board that meets at least twice a year.
     - Have a community forestry program that has an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
     - Have an Arbor Day Proclamation and celebration. Chattanooga has been a Tree City community since 1990.

This is an educational outreach which can structure a presentation to meet the needs of any school or civic group interested in urban forestry.
