: Zoning Inspection

Development Enforcement- Through plan review and inspection, zoning inspectors ensure land use requirements are enforced throughout the city.  This includes placement of new structures and use of new and existing structures, regulation of hazardous waste, cell towers, signs and landscaping.

National Flood Insurance Program-
Through plan review and field verification, zoning inspectors ensure that requirements set by the Federal Emergency Management Agency regarding flood plain management are followed.  This is necessary to ensure all citizens are able to obtain flood insurance at the best possible rate.

Neighborhood Enhancement-Zoning Inspectors Investigate various complaints of zoning violations including commercial uses within residential zones and commercial vehicles within residential zones.

The Board of Zoning Appeals has the power to make special exceptions to the zoning regulations in the following areas: 

  • Appeals from property owners on decisions or actions by an administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning ordinance;
  • Interpretation of Zoning Maps;
  • Review Conditional and other Special Permits;
  • Hear appeals from applicants aggrieved of any decision of the Downtown Residential/Mixed Use District Review.
