04-02-2013 Update on Fatal Fire on Rawlings Street

The mother has been identified as Shondell Jackson. She was treated and released from Erlanger Medical Center, reportedly for burns on her hands, and is now with her son at the burn center in Augusta.

Additional information: Both victims are boys, roughly 2 to 3 years of age. Firefighters found one of the boys on the floor near the kitchen, and the other in a bedroom. Both boys were carried out of the house, but despite rescue efforts by firefighters and EMS personnel, one of the boys could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead on the scene. The surviving boy suffered from severe burns and smoke inhalation and was flown to the burn center in Augusta. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Chattanooga Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau will be canvassing the neighborhood where the fatal fire occurred tomorrow (4-3-13) beginning around 9:30 a.m., to visit homes and distribute free smoke alarms where needed.
