8-26-18 Accidental Discharge of Firearm

• Upon arrival, CPD Officers located a suicidal party armed with a handgun
• Officers gave verbal commands to the individual to lower the firearm
• The individual refused to follow commands and fired a round mortally wounding himself
• An officer at the scene unintentionally discharged his firearm after the suicidal party shot himself
• Major Crimes Investigators determined the officer fired three rounds, two striking a chair, one striking the deceased man's leg
• All officers on scene were debriefed and placed on leave per CPD policy
• Members of the Violent Crimes Bureau, Crime Scene, and Internal Affairs Units are actively investigating
