Curbside Recycle Collection Information

The City of Chattanooga provides recycle collection to households and businesses. Eligible residents can be serviced by placing recyclables on the curb every other week.

  • Customers must sign up online for collection or call 311 or (423) 643-6311. 
  • Click here to view a map of your service day.  Collection is every two weeks. 
  • Customers with more than one garbage cart may also exchange a garbage cart for a recycle cart at no cost.  
  • Up to two recycle carts are allowed at each service location.  
  • To order a recycle cart call 311.
  • Recycle containers are FREE of charge.
  • Containers damaged during collection will be repaired or replaced by the City within 5 business days from the time a service request is created. To request a repair or replacement of your container please contact our 311 Information Center at 423-643-6311. Request can also be submitted by using the following options: by emailing 311 at 311@chattanooga.gov, submitting the request online or submitting a request with our CHATT311 app with your Apple or Android device. After the service request is made please leave damaged container curbside until it is repaired.
  • Container must be placed curbside by 7AM to ensure service
  • Do not place recyclables on the ground or on top of an automated container.
  • Lid must be completely closed.
  • Do not overfill container.
  • Collection crews will not pick up spills or litter resulting from overfilled containers.
  • DO NOT BAG RECYCLABLES 
  • Glass is not accepted inside your recycle container. Glass can be taken to one of the five recycle centers throughout the City.
  • Wood Debris/tree limbs are not accepted inside your recycle container. Wood debris/tree limbs can be taken to our Wood Recycle Center on N. Hawthorne street 
  • Please break down cardboard boxes.
  • All recyclable material must be clean of all food debris prior to being placed into your recycle container.

Recycle is collected on all holidays except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King’s Birthday (Third Monday in January), Good Friday, Easter, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day

Currently the market is low for plastics 3-7, However, We partnered with Hefty ReNew where they turn plastics 3-7 into things such as park benches, playground equipment, flooring, cinder blocks, 2x4's for buildings, and drainage pipes  

 

***PLASTICS 3-7 CAN BE DROPPED OFF AT OUR RECYCLE CENTERS IN A HEFTY ORANGE BAG IN THE ORANGE BAG BIN***

 

Hamilton county residents are allowed to recycle. Businesses are not allowed to recycle at our recycle centers.

Where do your recyclables go after your recycle bin?

 

After you put recyclables in your blue recycle cart our recycle trucks bring them to our MRF (Materials Recovery Facility). 

Once the material is sorted, Our MRF (Westrock) bales it up and sends it to compaines like:

Steel: Gerdau

Aluminum: Service Aluminum

FIBERS (paper and cardboard): WestRock, Chattanooga and Stevenson, AL

GLASS (from recycling centers only): Strategic Materials, Atlanta

PLASTIC 1 and 2*: Mohawk Flooring, North Georgia, KW Plastics Troy, AL
