A fire on Dodds Avenue Monday afternoon appears to have started from a spark from a welder working inside the commercial structure. CFD Green Shift companies responded to 4605 Dodds Ave at 11:55 AM. Smoke and flames were visible on arrival. Firefighters pulled 2.5” hose line and went into the front door for fire attack. Other personnel went to the side of the building, cut a roll-up door and made entry with a 1 3/4” hose to attack the fire from that angle. They got the flames knocked down quickly, but fire was still trapped in different void spaces and debris, so crews spent time in overhaul making sure everything was fully extinguished. At one point, the interior roof collapsed while firefighters were working inside. No one was injured. The structure sustained significant damage and needed to be torn down for safety reasons. Engine 9, Ladder 1, Quint 1, Engine 5, Ladder 5, Squad 13, Quint 14, Battalion 1, CFD’s Safety Chief, CFD’s Operations Chief, building inspectors, CPD, EPB and HCEMS were on the scene of this incident. Thanks to our Tri-State Mutual Aid Association for providing coverage in Chattanooga while we worked this fire.

The damage to other vehicles and Midas are seen in pictures from the scene provided by Battalion Chief Schroyer. According to Chattanooga PD, it is believed the cause of the crash was medically related.

An apartment fire sent one person to the hospital Friday morning. At 9:07 AM on 5/5/23, Blue Shift companies responded to the Rustic Village Apartments at 510 Central Drive. Food was accidentally left on the stove inside one of the units at the complex, starting a fire. The resident was out of the apartment upon CFD’s arrival and she was then transported to the hospital for observation for possible smoke inhalation. Children in the apartment were not injured. The building was evacuated. Squad 13 saw heavy smoke coming out of the patio door when they pulled up. Firefighters made an aggressive blitz attack to knock the fire down and then went into the structure to put the fire out. Kitchen contents were damaged and the apartment sustained smoke damage. Residents in the damaged unit were displaced. Quint 8, Quint 21, Engine 15, Squad 13, Ladder 7, Squad 7, Battalion 2, Battalion 1, HCEMS, CPD and EPB responded.

A fire at a Chattanooga apartment complex Sunday night was accidental in nature and caused smoke to travel to all nine floors of the high rise structure. At 10:26 PM on 4/30/23, Blue Shift companies were called to the Overlook Apartments at 1201 Boynton Drive. A burnt cardboard box was thrown down the trash chute from the 8th floor following a cooking mishap. It caught the trash compactor on fire on the main floor and smoked up the entire building as smoke traveled up the trash chute. Most residents were evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters tackled the trash compactor fire and got it extinguished. Then they ventilated every floor. Residents returned to their apartments once the smoke was cleared. There were no injuries. Ladder 1, Quint 1, Squad 1, Ladder 5, Engine 5, Engine 12, Quint 14, Quint 17, Battalion 1 and Battalion 3 responded.
